Louisa County is located between Charlottesville and Richmond in the rolling Piedmont section of Virginia. The county is mostly rural and has some of the largest contiguous farm acreage anywhere in central Virginia. The Historic Green Springs area has been protected by the National Park Service in order to preserve some of Louisa’s most fertile farmland. The 2012 Census of Agriculture counted 485 farms in Louisa at the time, totaling over 80,000 acres, with an average size of 165 acres. Livestock sales represented the majority of sales at 53% with cattle accounting for most livestock in the County. Crop sales were documented as 47% of total farm product sales (chiefly hay, soybeans, corn, and wheat). In Louisa County, cropland (37.5%) and woodland (36.7%) make up the majority of land use. They are followed by pastureland (20%) and other uses (5.9%).
